Three first half yellow cards would come back to cost Harlequins as Newcastle Falcons saw off their London counterparts 10-28 at The Stoop.

The score stood at 7-7 at the break but Harlequins were shown the yellow card three times by referee Tim Foley as James Chisholm, Joe Gray and Alofa Alofa were given ten minutes in the bin over three separate incidents.

Callum Chick scored late in the first half for Falcons before Dean Richards' men ran in three second half scores through Kyle Cooper, Chris Harris and Sinoti Sinoti to wrap up a bonus point win.

Earlier, Harlequins arrived at The Stoop looking for their first win in the league since the 50-21 victory at Big Game 10 in December.

Despite ending the match on the wrong side of the scoreboard it was Harlequins who struck first through one of their returning players. Marcus Smith found touch with an excellent kick from the penalty and the forwards set up good ground from the rolling maul.

After going through a number of phases, James Horwill stretched over shortly after and Smith sent over the conversion.

Shortly after and both sides were reduced to 14. James Chisholm and Nili Latu were both given ten minutes in the bin after an altercation at the breakdown.

Despite neither side scoring in the following ten minutes, Falcons ramped up the pressure; consistently going to the corner from a string of penalties.

A monumental effort on their own line saw Harlequins turn over possession with approval from The Stoop faithful, however Falcons would come again.

Smith was handed a chance to extend the lead from a penalty in front of the sticks but the young fly-half couldn't add the three.

Dean Richards' side built up the pressure again and although both sides were back to 15, Harlequins would lose a man when Joe Gray was shown yellow for collapsing the maul, metres out from Quins line.

Falcons did have their score six minutes from the half-time whistle after their maul and drive move finally paid off and Callum Chick got down first to score.

Eventually running out clear winners, Falcons came again but were held up numerous times by Quins' defence. Repeated line outs soon turned to multiple scrums and when Gray returned to the field, shortly after Alofa Alofa - on his 50th Harlequins appearance - was the next to be shown a yellow.

Quins managed to disrupt Falcons at the scrum and ended the half level.

Still down to 14, and Harlequins extended their lead early in the second half. Marcus Smith made up for his earlier miss and sent over a penalty just shy of the 50 minute mark to make the scores 7-10.

The fatigue from the monumental defensive effort at the end of the first half began to show shortly after. First is was Kyle Cooper following Matavesi and Hammersley's clever breaks before Chris Harris glided through the Quins defence to fend and get over, in the blink of an eye Falcons led 10-21.

With the wind firmly taken out their sails, Jono Kitto looked to get something going - as he did all match - but any chance of a comeback win was wiped out when Sinoti Sinoti crossed the line shortly after. The winger was found at first receiver from the scrum and the winger stepped his opposite number Alofa to cross.

Although there wasn't a lot for Quins to shout about in the second half, Demetri Catrakilis did make his long-awaited return from injury as a number of changes began to slow down the encounter.

Catrakilis did look good with a number of clever chips but Falcons saw out the game and the match finished 10-28.

Following today's match, Harlequins will return to The Stoop in six days' time to face Bath Rugby in the Aviva Premiership (Friday 2nd March, kick-off 19:45). Tickets are available at tickets.quins.co.uk or by calling the Ticket Office on 020 8410 6010
